The bluffer's guide to this season's menswear

To avoid sounding like a fool next time your friends discuss Giorgio Armani's updated approach to trousers or Paul Smith's statement on stripes or white being the new black over bottles of Grolsch or Penfolds Grange, here are the key pointers to looking sharp and sounding stylish next season.

Baggy trousers

WHILE Australian men continue to cling to the thigh-hugging reassurance of jeans that look as though they were purchased from the children's section of department stores, designers are pushing a more fluid silhouette that promises freedom of movement and respite from chafing.

At Hermes the trousers were like pyjama bottoms in the softest of striped cottons, teamed winningly with tailored, double-breasted jackets. Massimiliano Giornetti's roomy trousers at Salvatore Ferragamo were more formal, cuffed and presented in white, beige and blue. The summer edge came by teaming trousers with espadrille sandals.

Fashion's flavour of the month, Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, also offered comfort in pyjama-style bottoms that were shot with metallic thread and presented in velvet. Italo Zucchelli was feeling sporty at Calvin Klein Collection, choosing a silhouette that borrowed heavily from tracksuit pants and was executed in a variety of hi-tech surfaces and treatments, such as bonded leathers, resin suedes and waxed denim.

Menswear master Giorgio Armani nailed this trend to perfection, offering the subtlest details to voluminous trousers that made them more suitable for the boardroom than the bedroom. By tapering trousers at the ankle or subtly cropping them, Armani's designs suggested freedom with a formal edge.

Flower delivery

"FLORALS for spring? Groundbreaking," is the verdict delivered in a withering tone by Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada as she surveys the womenswear collections. For menswear, however, flowers on the runway are rare.

At Raf Simons orchids snaked across vests in neon blue, orange, white and red. Tropical prints flourished at Givenchy with designer Riccardo Tisci planting birds of paradise across shorts, T-shirts and baseball caps. The sporty shapes counteracted the feminine effect of large splotches of green, purple and pink.

At Kenzo, flowers appeared in exact detail on pyjama-style suits, billowing shorts and short-sleeved shirts suitable for long lunches in Hawaii. The floral print was then blown out to more abstract proportions on narrow trousers and neckerchiefs that would be more easily integrated into a man's wardrobe.

Here are some ideas to transform your space with tropical décor:

Change your bedding. Get in some palm tree bedding with a palm tree decorative pillow set that features palm trees and oversized palm fronds. Use tropical furniture made out of bamboo or rattan with wicker accents in a natural finish for that rustic look. Wrought-iron furniture looks good too. If you have wall space in the bedroom, tack on some artwork with a beach background. Pictures of family holidays at the beachside look good. Keep a tray filled with pieces of sea glass and shells on a side table or a coffee table. Keep some potted plants, the tropical indoor variety for an exotic look. Colored candles in deep colors also add to the look. Create a cozy reading nook or just a spot to chill out in the bedroom by placing an outdoor chair or a chaise. Add some soft cushions and hanging paper lanterns to get the look right. Cover your walls and even the ceiling in woven, natural fiber wallpaper. Use jute, bamboo or grass cloth for this. An area rug made out of natural fiber on the floor completes the look.

Throw in accent pillows in aqua colors or bright tropical colors like yellow, green, orange and pink to bring in a splash of color to your bedroom. Accessorize well to bring in the tropical flavor.
