How an 18th-century woman changed the life of a 20th-century boy

At the time, this was all unpublished primary source material – letters Judith had painstakingly copied into blank volumes, 20 volumes in all and about 5,000 letters, and left behind for future generations. This was a new eyewitness account, left behind by a woman who was a professional writer, who played at high levels, who was the “first” woman to do many things, and a native of Gloucester. The teacher also got the public library, Cape Ann Museum, and Universalist church (Judith was an early Universalist) involved along with the Sargent House Museum. Students were introduced to each one of these places, learned how to do research (archives, objects, historic houses), went on tours, and were treated like respected scholars. I remember one girl saying to me, “I’ve never been treated so well.” That broke my heart at the time, but, again, she had a new standard in her life.
Hi, I’m Bonnie Hurd Smith and I’ve helped dozens of businesses and organizations, and reached hundreds of individuals through my talks, with the message that “history” is not some dead, irrelevant “thing” you go visit in a museum. Instead, for businesses and organizations, history can be a powerful marketing, PR and community outreach tool if you go about it strategically. Personally, history is a source of inspiration like I've never seen. The stories of courage, character, and overcoming obstacles are all around us! Getting involved in history – your own history, your community’s, or things like women’s history, which is my passion, will attract attention, customers, and a high class, trustworthy reputation for your business. And I know those are three things that are always on your mind. But as an individual, if you’re like me, you want to make a difference in the world, and getting involved in history can do that. It’s legacy-building work. It’s deeply satisfying because there are countless stories to uncover, and tell, and learn from, and be inspired by -- and it’s important work – especially for young people who are not being taught history. And here’s my really radical statement. Folks, we have GOT to take history away from the cranky old ladies at historical societies, and we have GOT to take it out of the hands of bad history teachers. Instead, history needs to be in your hands, and in mine, in ways that benefit everyone – including you and your business! Yes, this is big, but I really want you along for the ride!
