Curran photo.FALMOUTH - Tuesday morning, Monica Mitchell , 42, of 174 Lowell Road in Mashpee, was arraigned in Falmouth District Court on charges in the death of an East Falmouth teenager. On Saturday night, Mitchell, a former Falmouth Police Department dispatcher, struck 16-year-old Jack Pearsall of East Falmouth with her SUV just before 10:30 p.m. on Old Barnstable Road near Leather Leaf Lane, shortly after the conclusion of Mashpee's fireworks, according to a Mashpee police release.
Responding officers determined the accident to be a hit and run and were given a description of the vehicle by witnesses present during the incident. Officers stopped a vehicle fitting the description on Old Barnstable Road near Mashpee High School. Monica Mitchell, the driver of the vehicle, was placed under arrest and transported to the Mashpee Police Department for processing.
Jack Pearsall was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston by MedFlight helicopter. According to court officials and members of his family, Jack Pearsall died as result of injuries sustained in the accident. Outside the courtroom, his mother, Kelly Pearsall, said her son Jack's heart was donated to a recipient.
In Falmouth District Court, Mitchell was charged with motor vehicle homicide OUI and negligent operation, leaving the scene of personal injury and death, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violations, according to police.
The accident is under investigation by Mashpee detectives. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact the Mashpee Police Department Detective Bureau at 508-539-1484.
Illegal fireworks ignite million dollar Swan River home early Tuesday
DENNIS - Just after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, Dennis firefighters responded to a call at a summer home on Swan River. Smoke and the smoke detector in the million dollar home woke the sleeping occupant, who was able to leave the home with his two dogs without injury, according to a Dennis Fire Department release.
The fire caused damage to the roof and the first and second floor bedrooms of the home. Dennis firefighters, with the assistance of a crew from the Yarmouth Fire Department, were able to bring the fire under control in less than a half hour.
