Bradenton looks to rein in beach rides

Bradenton, Florida - Dogs frolicked along the Palma Sola Causeway in Bradenton Thursday, but frequently, you can find much bigger animals here.

A local business brings tourists to the beach here for a ride on the wet side. But locals say private owners have also been horseback riding on the beach for decades.

"Back in the 70's, the kids who had their own horses would ride their horses over there," says beachgoer Jill George.

However, the city of Bradenton is about to rein in all this horsing around. City council members are moving to ban horses on the beach and have directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance. Public hearings will be held on the issue in the future.

Council members say they worry about safety with such large animals near beachgoers and they also have concerns about public health and the impact of horse poop in the water.

Tim Mattox runs the business Beach Horses . He's been bringing tourists from around the world to ride along the beach for three years. Mattox says the guided rides are safe, that his business keeps the beach clean and that horse manure in small amounts doesn't hurt the water quality.

"In fact, this side of the bay where were ride is consistently cleaner than that side of the bay where we never ride," says Mattox, pointing across Manatee Avenue West.

And while council members say they've received complaints about the horses, some beachgoers on Thursday support the rides.

Keith Higbee says he's seen the business clean up the beach. "The wagon with the lady, just like at the circus picking up the elephant poop-they pick up every piece of horse poop there could be."

And Higbee, who works at a local restaurant, says he'd also hate to see an operation that's good for tourism be forced to ride off into the sunset.

"They're majestic," he says of the horses. "They walk up and down the beach. They look beautiful."

The Concession Golf Club Real Estate and Homes for Sale – Bradenton

A community with a unique pedigree is what makes The Concession Golf Club a by-word among real estate professionals. This golf community draws its inspiration from the classic duel between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin during the 1969 Ryder Cup which ended in a tie after Nicklaus conceded a putt to Jacklin in their final round. Revered as one of the shining moments of golf sportsmanship, it became the foundation for the establishment of The Concession as an ode to friendship.

The choice of the location for the golf community is quite apt to mark the historic Nicklaus-Jacklin act of sportmanship in golf. The Concession was developed in a pristine area between the city of Bradenton and Sarasota. This site, only some two miles from Interstate 75, is likewise highly practical as it places the golf community close to the business and commercial centers of the two cities as well as their sports, arts, and cultural attractions. Also nearby are the beach playgrounds of the famous Siesta Key barrier island off the Florida Gulf Coast.

The Concession Golf Club’s real estate’s charm is further sweetened by a grand, 33,000-square-foot clubhouse with a classic colonial design. Apart from its rare golf memorabilia items, the clubhouse is a source of club members’ pride for its stylish interiors and chic furnishings. All these blend well with the structure’s expansive verandahs and broad picture windows that afford wonderful vistas of The Concession’s gorgeous golf links.

Formal and casual dining privileges for members are not the only amenities in the clubhouse. It also has private dining rooms, card rooms, full-service locker facilities, and a golf pro shop. Club member access to tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a fitness center and spa are provided in a separate sports center.

The Concession Golf Club’s 18-hole, par 72 golf course can stand as a layout that anyone representing the Bradenton real estate market can be proud of. Most appropriately, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin combined their genius in designing the golf links that span all 520 acres of well-preserved woodlands and awe-inspiring lakes. Named by the Golf Digest magazine as the best new course in 2006, the layout measures 7,479 yards and provides challenging play with its high slope rating and wide sand traps. The Concession Golf club also has expansive golf practice facilities that Golf Digest likewise cited as one of the top 75 practice areas in the US.
