In fact, such a dizzying array of devices using Google's operating system come out each month that it's hard to keep up. With so many competitors out there, how can a cell phone stand out?

One answer could be a product that appeals to a specialized crowd. We're starting to see some phones with a series of features geared toward a specific function or hobby, and one of these is the Casio G'zOne Commando.

The phone, offered through Verizon Wireless for $199 with a two-year contract, does everything a stock Android phone does, but it also comes loaded with software for hiking and other outdoor activities, all wrapped in a rugged exterior.

And what an exterior. The Commando's elongated hexagonal shape distinguishes it from most other phones, even before you notice the hard plastic molding bolted on the top and bottom with visible screws. The plastic extends beyond the meat of the phone itself without adding a lot of bulk, just like a reasonable cell phone case.

According to the product's advertising, it's compliant with U.S. Military Standards 810G, which means it's resistant to rain, shock, dust, salty fog, humidity, solar radiation, altitude and low or high temperatures. With flaps securely covering all the ports, it certainly looks secure.

But Verizon representatives encouraged me to really test it out. So, ignoring the part of my brain that was telling me I was about to do something horrible, I dropped the phone from shoulder-level onto the pavement. The casing isn't completely indestructible - it did pick up some scuff marks. But the phone kept working, and the screen didn't break.

The phone runs Android 2.2 well, but of course it's loaded with the manufacturer's own touches, in this case G'z Gear. The compass accessed from within the app is nice and smooth, though weirdly enough the one pre-loaded on the phone's front page is very choppy.

An app also has a jogging trainer that logs how far and long you run, and can compare that to paces set by various world record holders or, alternately, a waddling penguin or sloth. It might be nice to have an option somewhere between insane and insulting.

Other features include a pedometer with a "virtual trek," so you can pretend you're hiking on a rugged outdoor trail while you're ambling through the mall, "trip memory," which records where you've been via GPS coordinates, a thermometer, tide chart, sunrise and sunset schedule, and a star map.
