12 Pinoy stranded seafarers back tonight
MANILA, Philippines – Twelve Filipino seafarers who were stranded in Valencia, Spain for 8 months will be arriving tonight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said in a press statement that the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will be assisted through customs and immigration procedures.
The 12 sailors were stranded in Spain after their ship, the M/V Nafto Cement, was arrested for various unsettled debts to creditors. The crew has relied on their personal cell phones for communication as the ships’ communication facilities were cut on April 2010.
The seafarers will need post-trauma counseling and legal assistance to press for payment from their recruitment agency for unpaid salaries, according to Dimzon.
They will also be briefed on their rights under their contracts. Dimzon added that OWWA will assist the OFWs in claiming their salaries and filing complaints with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.
Labor attaché Ramon T. Tionloc and OWWA Welfare Officer Eduardo Bellido of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Madrid worked to get the OFWs' exit clearances from Valencia.
The sailors’ local manning agency is Status Maritime Agency Corp.
