Fishing Boat that Capsized in Baja Not from Dana Point
, A 115-foot “mother ship” operated by San Diego company Baja Sportfishing Inc., departed out of San Felipe on July 2 for a four-day fishing trip to the Sea of Cortez in Baja California. According to U.S. and Mexican authorities, an unexpected storm hit and large waves tipped the boat at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday as it sat off the coast of San Luis Island sending 44 passengers into the water. Timeline for Jesús Enrique Rejón Aguilar:
April 3, 1993, through 1998: Rejón joined the Mexican military in his native state of Campeche and in 1996 was assigned to the Mexico’s Special Forces (GAFE). In 1997, he was assigned to the Attorney General’s Office as “Agent C” with duties in Reynosa and Miguel Alemán in the state of Tamaulipas. In 1998 he was transferred to Saltillo in the state of Coahuila.
February 1999: He deserted from Mexico’s Special Forces. The following month, by invitation of Arturo Guzmán Decena, alias "El Z1," he formed part of the “Grupo de los 14” that founded the Zetas as the Gulf cartel’s security arm. His initial duties were to provide security to the safe houses of Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, where money, drugs and weapons were stored. When he gained Cárdenas Guillén’s confidence, Rejón was responsible of providing security for Cárdenas Guillén’s family.
After Cárdenas Guillén was captured in 2003, the Zetas positioned themselves within the Gulf cartel’s structure, gaining more responsibilities and engaging in criminal activity that caused great impact in states where the Gulf cartel had a presence.
2007: Rejón was assigned the plazas (drug-trafficking routes) in Nuevo Laredo and Miguel Alemán, under the supervision of Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, alias “El Z-40,” where he continued until 2009.
When the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas ruptured their relationship in 2010 over the control of the state of Tamaulipas, Rejón was assigned regional coordinator of the central and northern states, including San Luis Potosi.

The arrest Sunday in Mexico of the man said to be the third highest leader of the Zetas criminal organization was deemed by Mexico a “triumph” and by U.S. law enforcement as “significant.”
Jesús Enrique Rejón Aguilar, alias “El Mamito,” is said to be tied to the February slaying of Special Agent Jaime J. Zapata of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
But a spokesman for Grupo Savant, a Washington-based intelligence group, said Rejón’s arrest is “nothing earth-shattering.”
“He is an important figure, but I don’t think that it is going to debilitate the organization. He’s important, but he’s not at the highest level,” the spokesman said.
