New Music From The Bronx To Brazil
English / Spanish
When I lived in Mexico, I discovered one of my favorite desserts, tres leches. Ubiquitous throughout Latin America, it is named for the trio of dairy products saturating its delicious sponge cake: evaporated and condensed milk and heavy cream. The music on this week's show is as rich and layered as a tres leches cake. Drum beats are dripped over synthesizers, synthesizers are poured over vocal loops and the tracks they create are so much greater than the sum of their parts.
We've got a new track by Maluca , everyone's favorite Dominican princess, whose career we've been watching since she released "El Tigeraso" in 2009. Her new song "Lola" feels like a tribute to jump rope and rhyming games. As in her video "El Tigeraso," Maluca celebrates the rhythms of Dominican-American urban communities like the one where she grew up in New York. "Lola" reminds me of little girls singing schoolyard songs in the Spanish of their parents and the English that surrounds them, and compressed back beats give this dazzling track a heightened sense of tension.
Later in the show, NPR producer and electronica aficionado Sami Yenigun discusses a DC-based movement that's gone global, moombahton . The new genre mixes slowed-down Dutch house beats with reggaeton and other Latin music like cumbia and bachata. The music was inspired by a skipping party, in which kids ditched school and invited their friends over. The kids were dancing to reggaeton, and when the DJ arrived, he decided to slow down his fast-paced house music so the kids would keep grooving. (I suppose the best inspirations often come from doing something different, or maybe even a little illicit.) Moombahton has exploded and its followers are as diverse as the venues where the music is played. Sami brought in "Sandungeo" by Dominican-born, Netherlands-based DJ Munchi .
My personal favorite from this week is the infectious "Dona Sandra" by Zuzuka Poderosa and Dublin based producer Orquesta . The song tells the story of a woman who went to Mozambique to começar tudo de novo , or start over after a love affair gone wrong. Zuzuka's assured voice and frank presentation give the song its urgency. There's an unusual quality to the instrumentation (co-host Felix Contreras said it reminded him of Brazilian band Uakti ), and that mystery serves as an invitation to listen to this very sad tale. It's almost like a warning to be careful who you fall in love with. A warning you can dance to.

After turning Saint-Ex's tiny basement into a Rio-style throwdown and turning heads DJing at Eighteenth Street Lounge's monthly Brazilian soiree, DJ Neal Becton is taking the Brazilian Rhythms dance party to the Capitol Skyline Hotel's pool deck.

Their trademark mixture of real instruments, electronic textures and phrases that encapsulate everything from Brazilian bossa nova to old school Jamaican dub are solidly intact. The juxtaposition of grooves is still profound and disturbing when it
