. All because I have this Achilles’ tendon when it comes to math. And yes, I know some of the theme today has more to do with science, but the entries are presented in the form of numerical equations or measurements and gosh darn it (or words to that effect), I just wasn’t paying enough attention in school to remember this stuff.
So let’s pay attention to the other entries instead. As impressive as they are, let’s not even look at the theme entries today. Just because Mr. Baring can figure out AVOGADRO’S NUMBER from a multiplication problem that looks like a calculator threw up on the page doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s lording it over us. He’s probably a very nice person.
I also didn’t know that there was such a thing as a “Power Flosser” (ORAL B). A power mower, yes. I had SOILS for a while, until I got REISSUES and was slightly less satisfied with ROILS.
But I did like the reference to my favorite art period, Art DECO. And there was quite a bit of crunch in the longer entries, like NAIL POLISH, BREASTBONE, and TOP SCORE. I’m proud to say that I only flinched slightly when filling in REORG, having been a victim of quite a few of them when I was in advertising in the 1980s.
Nice puzzle, Mr. Baring. Most of all, I like the way you TANGOed right through the middle of the grid:

Chrysler Building, New York City
William Van Alen designed the art deco Chrysler Building in New York City, completed in 1930. At 77 floors and 1,048ft it was the tallest building from the start of the Great Depression until being surpassed by the Empire State Building. The spire was secretly erected inside the tower to win the contest of tallest building. In total it cost $20 million.
Automobile giant Walter Chrysler envisioned a monument to American ingenuity and included details from modern automobiles alongside touches from ancient Gothic buildings. Gargoyles were derived from the hood ornaments of the Plymouth. The seven terraced arches is a cruciform groin vault form pyarmided up into a point. The silvery Enduro KA-2 stainless steel pushes the automobile theme. The showrooms at the based were triple height, and the corners were glazed to lighten the impression of the structure.
