Learning to bake the Viking way (PHOTOS)

Not only does the Viking Range showroom sell appliances, they will teach you how to use them.

Those eager to learn new baking skills came from near and far last Sunday afternoon to the Viking kitchen to hone their cupcake skills.

Before they left, all had learned how to make three different types of delectable cupcakes from scratch, three different icings and how to get creative with decorating.

They also learned to make three different kinds of cake balls, which are perfect to take to special events.

The class was taught by Lance Dean, who wrote "Gourmet Your Way."

The cake balls were a hit with all, as was making the decorations.

Cake balls are made by simply breaking a baked cake apart into a bowl, stirring in icing, then rolling into balls. The balls are then refrigerated or frozen if needed for quicker serving, then dipped in a chocolate, caramel, or cream cheese sauce. If desired, the balls can then be rolled in coconut or finely chopped nuts. This easy recipe is perfect for gift-giving during the holidays or for serving at showers.

Dean also showed how simple it is to make decorations such as carrots, flowers, and anything else you can imagine, by using fondant or marzipan. Just cut to size and roll to impress your guests with your creativity.

"This is my passion," he said.

And when baking cakes, the best determination of whether its done is the old-fashioned way — sticking a toothpick into the center. 

At the end of class, participants got to sample their creations, plus take home a box of goodies for later.
