You don't have to be able to ride a horse to take part in Oregon rodeos. But you might have to be able to ride a sheep.

The rodeo at the Molalla Buckeroo has featured the traditional rodeo activities, such as calf roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing -- ropin' and ridin' to the veterans -- since 1913.

For the past three years, though, the first thing visitors might notice when they enter the gates is a long line of children younger than 7 waiting to ride a sheep in a miniature ring. The event is called Mutton Bustin', and Frank Rendon, the organizer and announcer, emphasizes that the animal and size of participant is the only thing that separates the riders from professionals.

"Remember folks, these kids are doing exactly the same thing as a professional cowboy," Rendon repeats, as he instructs each child how to hold onto the ropes.

Wool Busters , Frank and his wife Brenda Rendon's company, travels the region running these small-scale rodeos. All children ride for free, as long as they are younger than 7 and less than 55 pounds.

"We have a lot of fun with this," Brenda Rendon said. She manages the sign-up sheet and does chaos control.

She had her hands full Saturday, when the first two rides ended with sheep jumping the fence and bounding into the street or through the carnival. It took at least five volunteers and rodeo workers to catch one of them, wrestle it down and lead it back into the ring.

Nevertheless, the line of eager kids seemed unfazed.

Cody Huffman, 5, of Oregon City was almost stoic while waiting for his chance, except when his parents wondered aloud whether the line was too long to wait. It was his first time riding, but with the fearlessness of youth, he kept a straight face even while mounting the sheep.

After he was led around, all he had to say about the experience was that it was "good" and "fun." Both Cody and his 2 1/2-year-old sister, Kaylee, wanted to ride again when they were done. But when Brandt Huffman, their dad, offered to take Cody home to get his pants and boots so he could ride again without being held by the staff, he said he wasn't quite ready for that yet.

The Buckeroo started Friday and runs through Monday. The days feature a carnival, with rides and fair food, and the evenings are when the professionals come out to compete. Each night concludes with fireworks after the rodeo.
