Remedies For Ingrown Toenails

Saving Medicare begins at home

I’m sure the rule requiring homebound status for home-health services was well-intentioned. But it causes problems. Treating a patient in a hospital costs Medicare hundreds or thousands of dollars more than providing care at home. One day in a hospital averages about $6,200, and one home-care visit from a nurse or therapist averages about $135, according to the National Association of Home Care’s “Basic Statistics about Home Care, based on 2009 Bureau of Labor statistics.

Right about now, I should tell you that I’ve been a home-health nurse since 1997. And I once spent four days feeling imprisoned in a hospital, tethered to an IV — one that I could (and, I argue, should) have received at home. My insurance policy probably (not uncommonly) mimicked Medicare — requiring homebound status to receive home-health services. I was too active and otherwise healthy to get care at home. Instead, I languished in the hospital.

Sometimes, hospitalization is unavoidable. Surgery, intensive care, frequent treatments and tests that require sophisticated equipment and machinery — these things need to happen in hospitals. When you’re sick enough to be in the hospital, that’s where you should be. Thank God that our nation is blessed with some of the world’s best hospitals, where lives are saved and skilled clinicians perform miraculous surgeries and other treatments every day.
