World Floral Competition held in Boston

Formed in 1981, its aims are “to promote the art of flower arranging throughout the world; to reinforce the ties among member countries through regular exchange visits, publications, international seminars and flower shows; and to establish international standards for all flower arranging competitions.”
   
The Association currently has a membership of 30 organizations in 29 countries. Management of the group is assigned to an elected country for a three-year term, with members meeting every three years for a World Floral Competition, General Assembly and associated events.
   
This year, for the first time, the show was held in the United States, with Boston, Mass., serving as the site of the 10th World Show. Running from June 16 through 19, it brought together flower arrangers from around the world who interpreted the theme, “The Glorious Earth.”
   
It was exciting to learn that the World Show would be in the United States, and in Boston, which was within driving distance. A group of Staten Island garden club members made reservations and plans last October to take advantage of this “once in a lifetime” opportunity to view the show and were not in the least bit disappointed.
  
WAFA rules specify that exhibits be made of plant material, with or without accessories, within the space specified in the show schedule.
   
Plant material must predominate over all other components of the exhibit. Fresh plant material must be in water or in water-retaining material, unless such material remains turgid throughout the event. Painted and/or artificially colored plant material may be used unless otherwise stated in the schedule.

30 COUNTRIES REPRESENTED

All 30 WAFA countries were represented on the show floor; judges from 20 countries participated in the decision-making process. Exhibitors paid a fee of $250 for the privilege of entering the show and incurred the additional costs of traveling and hotel expenses. Such is the devotion and passion exhibitors have for floral design and the WAFA organization!
    
There were 34 categories, or classes, of competition, including mail-in classes featuring botanical jewelry titled “Insects” and a Collage class dubbed “Evolution.
