Pulling into the parking lot of Riva Gardens Inc., I found myself wondering why I had never been there before. I've lived less than 10 minutes down the road my entire life but was somehow oblivious to the fact that the garden center housed a local produce shop. There are two signs - one, a giant ear of corn, and the other, a marquee sign - quietly placed at the end of the property listing cantaloupe, tomatoes and berries for sale. But neither gives passersby a clue to the array of produce inside.

Hidden behind a lush display of plants, potted herb flowers, trees and garden supplies is the Riva Gardens building. One step inside and voila: a market brimming with local produce. From their corn - which has won awards for best-tasting in Anne Arundel County - to tomatoes, beets, melons, peaches, potatoes, onions, peppers and even fresh local cheeses, eggs, salsa and honey, it's almost a one-stop shop.

"We want to educate people on the benefits of eating locally," owner Diane Morehead said. "We've really been working with kids and trying to get into schools; to educate the kids and get them excited about picking fruits and vegetables and getting their parents involved."

This hidden gem is popular with locals, and Morehead, who lost 70 pounds by eating local and cooking at home, keeps a Facebook page for the business to let customers know when fresh produce comes in - and when it sells out. "We'll have lima beans and okra a little later in the summer," she said. "Those sell out fast."

As I perused the shop, I couldn't help but grab some fresh mozzarella from South Mountain Creamery outside of Frederick. I had visions of pairing it with perfect local heirloom tomatoes - my favorite summertime indulgence. Unfortunately, a regular customer had been in earlier that day and purchased every single one in stock.

Luckily, peach season is upon us, as Maryland's peak season runs July through September. Riva Gardens had two varieties, "Peter Friday" and "Deseree," grown at Swann Farms in Owings, so I purchased both.

Peaches are one of my earliest food memories and have been my favorite fruit since my first taste at age six. I can still remember my grandmother, visiting for the Fourth of July holiday, handing me a slice to try. I was wary at first; the fuzzy skin was different than anything I'd seen before. One bite later, I was hooked. The sweet, juicy flesh was the most delicious thing I had ever tasted.

The Trixie Halloween witch doll and the chubby Halloween mummy deserve special mention.

For the romantics, who love to decorate their homes with love infused designs, there are beautiful home decorations too. The “I love you to the moon” pillow is a good example of that. It’s not too over the top, yet looks classy and time tested. Made of homespun fabric, you can be assured that it will bring back memories from your past.
