Antiques find niche in green, youthful décor
By JESSICA MASULLI jmasulli@njherald.com LAFAYETTE — Antiques usually conjure up images of old, well-crafted furniture, but most people don't expect those pieces to end up in an eco-friendly 20-something-year-old's loft apartment. However, this trend toward seeing antiques as a younger and greener decorating option has swept through Lafayette Mill Antiques Center. "It has brought excitement and youth to the (antique) trade," Mill co-owner Don Kihlstrom said. "They are saying, â None of my friends have things like this.' " Kihlstrom explained that the Mill has had to shift to include pieces that are not more than 100 years old, and therefore are not typically considered an antique, but are now being included at many antique stores to attract new buyers. "The standard now is not how old it is, but how good it is," Kihlstrom said. To further draw in this crowd, the Mill is hosting a "Go Green" open house weekend Saturday and Sunday to showcase and explain to guests how antiques are green. The 45 dealers will be ready to sell pieces that have far less of a carbon footprint, but still top new pieces in quality and charm. Kihlstrom said antiques are usually sold multiple times for different uses, making them a clear example of recycling, but they also have a longer lifespan that far exceeds the typical seven to 15-year lifespan of new items. A product footprint comparison by Carbon Clear Ltd. compared two similar quality chest of drawers from the 1830s and today to see which emits more greenhouse gases throughout its lifespan. They found that the 1830 chest is on a yearly basis 16 times more environmentally friendly due to its long lifespan, recycling and method of manufacturing. "People haven't typically thought of it that way," Kihlstrom said. "It is nice to be able to think we are reclaiming our heritage. You get to hang on to recycled memories." Sharon Happle, Sign of the Tymes store owner in the Mill, has found that people younger than 30 have been coming to her toys and signs antique store looking for unique items to set themselves apart from others. She said that people are buying keys, not for their normal use, but instead to put on chains for jewelry or even attach to ribbon for a wedding gift favor.
