Bright, spacious condo has great outdoor space
Mary, a retiree, has purchased a spacious 1,450-square-foot condominium.
She admits she is a confused about how to set up her new home. Interior designer Jean Akerman is more than pleased to help.
“I’m very impressed with this layout. And look at those beautiful terraces,” says Akerman, owner of Jean Akerman Interior Design ( www.jeanakermandesign.com ).
Although outdoor space in Ontario has limited seasonal use, Akerman believes large terraces are a way for people to compensate for the gardens they lose when they move from a house.
This condo has other laudable features including a bright southeast exposure, a hidden laundry, enclosed kitchen and a decent foyer.
The one drawback here is the blank wall facing the front door, according to Akerman. She would remedy this by investing in a dramatic oversized painting. Other than that, the foyer has plenty of potential. For starters, it has a dropped coffer ceiling that Mary can turn into a feature. Akerman suggests silver-leafing the inside of this ceiling and then adding crown moulding and installing a rope of tiny LED lights around the periphery.
“I would have burnished silver, not an in-your-face metallic look, and I’d hang a smallish crystal chandelier in the middle. This will create an elegant ambience the moment you walk in,” Akerman says.
She would also install two chandeliers in the long hall (between bathroom and kitchen) that matches the one in the coffered ceiling.
The angled wall here both opens the space and invites people into the open living area. If Mary has the means, Akerman urges her to eliminate the den doors and replace the solid angled wall with tempered or etched glass so the space can breathe. She would frame the glass partition with wood, painted the same colour as the rest of the doors and woodwork in the suite. Inside the den, there’s space for a 30-inch desk and an 18-inch-deep credenza along the exterior wall.
Mary indicates she would like to set up her living room on the left side of this “great room.” Akerman is in total agreement with this notion and recommends floating and centring a sofa so it faces the bedroom wall (one arm lined up with the wall, dividing the patio doors) and placing two lounge chairs with their backs to the patio. She would also park a console table with a TV above it on the bedroom wall. Mary could tuck a couple of small benches under the console for extra seating and then anchor the living room with an area rug.
