Iowa State Fair focus on keeping event safe

Iowa State Fair officials had already tightened their security measures with the help of the Iowa State Patrol and Des Moines police after disturbances in the early morning last year that included two stab wounds, two attacks on police and 27 arrests outside the gates of the fair. However, the biggest concern for the welfare of the audience just was and continues to be the potential for severe weather, fair officials said.Iowa State Fair officials remain in close contact with the National Weather Service personnel who are on the website of the exhibition for 11 days of the event annual race when the threatening weather develops, and they have a document two pages severe weather policy covering procedures for notification, coordination, evacuation and search procedures for post-event response to circumstances that include the possibility of a tornado on the ground tearing the exhibition and adjacent campgrounds. "We have a system in place, if we ever needed to get the word out to the fairgrounds," said Chappell."We were in a state of heightened alert and the type of loan, but we've just been incredibly blessed and fortunate that the storm dissipated or passed us by or whatever the case, perhaps we never had to take any action of this or go through it. But it's always good to be prepared and be on your toes at all times. The action plan calls for fair officials to set up a system of command if severe weather seems eminent and procedures for emergency officials to direct customers to the site and campers to a dozen buildings safer and stronger of the fair to accommodate the potential for tens of thousands of people who could be on the field when there is a storm, she said. The fair also has a separate procedure for severe weather moving relocation of more than 10,000 people in the forum that Chappell said could clear the structure within 15 to 20 minutes. Also, unlike the temporary stage collapsed in Indiana, Iowa, the fair has a permanent 40-foot by 60 foot stage with a clearance of 27 feet that was built to the standards of construction code and a different weight load limits to maintain the structure integrity.During the off season, officials with the Iowa job just Homeland Security, emergency management, public safety, the National Weather Service, public health agencies and local police and fire departments to review procedures emergency and carry out practical exercises for a variety of potential disasters that include a tornado strikes, criminal activity, terrorism-related attack, a collapse of the building - almost any situation requiring crisis management, said Slater. "The field of meteorology weather is not an exact science, so that makes it more difficult along the way.Ultimately, we must keep our customers, employees and volunteers safe and that's what we do to the best of our ability, "he said." Sometimes even the best plans of people are injured. This is an issue to mitigate any type of crisis and do it better than it would have been had you not had a plan at all. "preparations similar to the county level, but not to the extent across the Iowa State Fair, said John Harms, director of the Great Jones County Fair and Food Fest who also sits on the board of Iowa State Fair Board. He also said viewers are generally fair better informed to make their own decisions with the proliferation of high-tech phones that allow them to track weather radar and storm. Harms said he was confronted with a situation where last month he settled in Monticello was in the path of a storm in the advancement of strong winds with Lady Antebellum expected to perform at the stage of the fair that was upgraded to a permanent structure in 2010. The changing conditions caused the fair to move up the time the opening act to the stage, shorten the time between acts and shorten the performance by a couple of songs to beat the storm and still get the show in as planned. Harms said his county fair has held concerts where rain fell throughout the performance. Thursday night’s grandstand concert at the state fairgrounds was delayed due to a lightning associated with a storm front that moved through central Iowa, but show was able to proceed as conditions improved, he added.
