Five burning questions for Cowboys camp
The Dallas Cowboys are finally in San Antonio for training camp. Here are the top five storylines that bear watching over the next few weeks.1. Can new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan put his stamp on this unit immediately?
Like his brother, Rex, Rob is incredibly confident and doesn't mind telling you how successful he's going to be. But he didn't exactly light it up in his first seasons at Oakland and Cleveland, and those jobs came with full offseasons.
Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking told me earlier this week that Ryan's defense is as complex as anything he has seen, and he believes the playbook might have to pared down because so much time has been lost. But Ryan didn't waste any time calling zone blitzes in the first couple practices, even in the walk-through portion.
Ryan brings a swagger to his side of the ball that has been missing at Valley Ranch. Wade Phillips was an excellent tactician, but he didn't exactly light a fire under his players.
Asked on Thursday whether he is installing his entire defense, Ryan said: "Yeah, this is for real. It's not like it's OTAs or whatever. This is training camp; we're going to put our training camp defense in, which is our regular defense. Pretty soon we're going to have to face live bullets and win."
The Cowboys have to hope that Ryan's slow starts at his previous stops had more to do with a lack of talent than a lack of time.
2. All eyes will be on second-year wide receiver Dez Bryant. Can he handle the pressure?
There's no question he's supremely talented, but he's coming off an embarrassing offseason. And, because there's no depth at his position, there's not any way to ease him back into the lineup.
For this team to be successful, Bryant must remain on the field. He also has to embrace the classroom aspect of the game – or at least stay awake in meetings.
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett hired wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson away from the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, in part because he knew he wouldn't coddle Bryant. Garrett believed that former receivers coach Ray Sherman was too lenient with his players, especially Bryant. Robinson has indicated a willingness to stay on top of Bryant throughout training camp and the season.
If Bryant can stay healthy, he has the ability to do for the Cowboys a lot of what DeSean Jackson does for the Eagles.

Those who perform like Greek gods will find a locker at Valley Ranch with their name on it. 4. Will someone give the "end of Choice" rumors credence? Since the first day of training camp, positive reports of Lonyae Miller and Phillip Tanner have

It's just that when he was running for president, Republicans were eager to portray him as a salt-of-the-earth cowboy who would have spent a quiet life clearing brush at his Crawford Ranch if not for his deep, abiding love of country.
Charean Williams raises the possibility of the Cowboys trading Igor Olshansky -- maybe to Houston, where Wade Phillips is the defensive coordinator -- if they're not going to use him. Olshansky, she says (yeah, try saying that 10 times fast),
Quarterback Brayden Linde and running backs Taylor Johanson and Mitch Phillips will lead the I-formation attack. Against a team like Olympus, Snow Canyon will need to be sound in the secondary, which will be led by returning linebackers Curtis Bulloch

• Awesome arrow groups & deadly bows…the second photo is a shoot off between me, Wayne Endicott and Chris Phillips from 90 yards we had the other day. Those three arrows were the sickest 90 yard group I’ve ever seen. I think this level of accuracy is a good testament to having your bow and arrow rig set up right. The pros at the Bow Rack can help you with this. • Shooting bows with friends this spring and summer (Chris Phillips, Chad Montgomery, Wayne Endicott, Nick Hammond, Tim Adair, Guy Harris, Tanner Hanes, Nate Costa, Rick Thomas, Jared Thomas, Chris Stewart, Pete Hanes, Roy Roth, Taylor Roth, Cord Wilkins, Kristy Lee Cook, Eric Kranzush, and the legendary, Larry D. Jones, etc.) There is nothing more I enjoy than shooting bows with my buddies….new and old bowhunters alike. The Camaraderie of bowhunting s something special.
• The key to my buddy/bow shooting experience is we gotta have Jason Aldean cranking in my truck!!!!! Every night! Doors open music jammin’ over the open fields, a black ridge in the distances covered with Old Growth Timber. Perfect setting for me. It just feels right…I hate when it starts getting dark….I’d love to keep shooting for hours. • Running with family….to prepare for the mountains, solo running is best, but running and sharing quality time with my family is mandatory. Tonight’s 8 mile run/ride with Tanner and Taryn was awesome. Taryn said multiple times when she was riding and I was running along side of her how much she loved our time together. Until the end when she had a sideache and her butt hurt. Fun night. It was a warm one and I loved it! • I love lifting weights…I love the pump, the veins, I love the burn, love being sore, love feeling strong and undeniable in the backcountry, and to be honest, I enjoy looking fit. I love when all the hard work starts paying off and my horse shoe necklace starts fitting tight around my filled out neck…much like a rutted up ol’ buck. I put on size for months, then before season I work to get shredded. I want to be lean…I yearn to uncover that six pack (not easy). This last couple of weeks I have lost 9 pounds, a little muscle likely, but mostly fat. I went from 175 to 166, but my strength is higher than it has ever been (see below). Also, I do crazy out-of-the-box things like pack my 95 lbs. Olympic barbell 3 miles up and down the hill I run. Why? Because it hurt and I was miserable and I wanted to know if I could do it. I could. • I am shooting well. I thank God every day I live in the shadow of The Bow Rack, info@thebowrack, these guys are awesome. I am easily twice as good of shot directly because of their influence. They are such pros. I took my bow in today because I could tell something had changed. Yup, my arrow was tearing slightly tail low through paper. After jockeying the rest, moving the peep, twisting the buss, timing the cams on the Hooter Shooter, raising the peep, well, I was in business. I am not sure what bowhunters who don’t have access to pros would do, probably just try to ride it out, which means their shooting would suffer, which also means their performance would suffer…not good. Regardless, I am counting my lucky starts. Thanks Wayne, Chris and Chris.
