Firefighters battle blaze east of Fort Nelson

The BC Wildfire Management Branch is stepping up its efforts on an ongoing wildfire east of Fort Nelson.

18 firefighters are currently fighting the blaze and more are on the way. The fire was reported in on Wednesday, and is steady at about 50 hectares. No structures have been damaged and there have been no reported injuries from the blaze, which is burning near Shekilie River, about 14 km from the Alberta border.

Jillian Chimko, Fire Information Officer at the Prince George Fire Centre said "the fire is far away from any settlements" and is "not currently considered a threat". The Fire Centre is reporting the blaze as 60% contained, and not spreading.

Eight new fires have been sparked in the Prince George Fire Centre in the past week. Most of these have been extinguished or are currently under observation.

Most of the Prince George Fire Centre is currently at a low or moderate fire risk, but the area around the Liard River is listed as a high risk.
