Navy's stamp of approval
AN AUSTRALIA Post stamp series saluting the Royal Australian Navy's 100 years of service (1911-2011), to be issued on Tuesday, will feature the face of a Canberran sailor, Able Seaman Rebecca Florance. The 21-year-old combat systems operator, pictured, grew up in Chisholm and works in Bungendore. Florance was proud and honoured to be chosen to appear on a stamp and also expressed a passion for her work in the Navy. ''It's never boring,'' she said. ''For example one week your ship is alongside [the wharf], the next you're at sea ... doing something exciting like fighting aircraft or trying to chase a submarine contact on sonar.'' The series also shows a historical image of boy sailor Frederick Mills, who was killed in action in World War II. Mills' daughter, Barbara Gough, 78, will be in Australia for the stamp launch on Sunday in Sydney and will visit Canberra.Geographical feat
TELOPEA Park School student Lewis Rosenberg, 15, pictured right, secured seventh place in this year's National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition. This is a decent effort given that it wasn't until a tie-breaker question in the seventh and final round of the contest that a clear winner emerged. Contestants had to deal with questions such as ''name one of Australia's operational uranium mines'' (Ranger or Olympic Dam or Beverley); and ''what word is a tributary prevented from joining the main river for some distance because of levees?'' The answer is yazoo. For most of the rounds, the scores of eight of Australia's finest geography students representing each state and territory were very close. Michael Gu of Melbourne Grammar School finished the final one point in front of his Queensland rival Jesse Tong. Those two boys will represent Australia at the National Geographic World Championship next month. The final of the competition will air on the National Geographic Channel on June 24. Lewis's passion for geography comes from his overseas adventures. He has visited Vietnam, Cambodia and relatives in Italy.
Weekend blood drive
THE LONG weekend is an urgent time for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service which is in need of donors willing to roll up their sleeves and help out. Public holidays are a crucial time for blood supply as there are fewer collection days. The demand for blood and platelet donations peaks at holiday times when the number of road accidents and trauma increases. Blood and blood products have a short shelf life.
