Meet This Year's Heritage Day Reader
Here's a history quiz: Which side in the Revolutionary War had the most black soldiers, the colonists or the British?
The answer: the British, by a 2-to-1 margin, says Noah Lewis , a historic re-enactor who'll be reading the Declaration of Independence this Sunday at Easton's Heritage Day .
Imagine you're a slave in colonial America, Lewis said Tuesday in a phone interview. "Do you really care which white master rules over you?"
Probably not. "But," Lewis continued, "do you care about being on the winning side?"
At that point, he said, the British would've seemed like certain winners: better trained, better equipped, with the weight of an empire behind them. And possibly more likely to free the slaves in their army, Lewis said.
Over the last few years, Lewis has played a black soldier on the American side of the war named Ned Hector .
It's Hector he'll be portraying Sunday in Easton, a break in tradition, since Heritage Day's reader typically portrays Robert Levers, the man who actually read the Declaration in Easton on July 8, 1776.
(For the uninitiated, Easton was one of three cities were the Declaration was read publicly, Philadelphia and Trenton being the other two.)
But even though he's not portraying Levers, Lewis says the idea behind the Declaration would've been important to Hector -- who was a free black soldier -- and all other black troops.
And he hopes his portrayal will offer a lesson about black soldiers during the Revolution, and erase the misconception that they simply performed manual labor for the Continental Army.
In reality, there were majority black regiments during the war, Lewis said. In fact, the Continental Army would be the most integrated version of the American army until 1948 when President Truman made integration the law.
"You wonder, 'Why don't we know about these people?'" Lewis asked.
He says it's because post-Revolutionary America was worried about slave uprisings -- like the one in Haiti -- and thus suppressed stories about black soldiers such as Hector.
"I'm not saying we won the American Revolution all by ourselves," Lewis said.
At the same time, he thinks it's important to recognize that "Black History" and "American History" can never really be mutually exclusive.
"Our diversity," Lewis said, "has always been our power.

Question on wireless flash trigger - Steve's Digicams Forums
With a dedicated wireless setup (as in using your camera's built in flash, or a compatible hotshoe mounted flash acting as a master to communicate with your 48 AF-1), the camera communicates with the flash to tell it to perform a metering preflash and measures the reflected light, then instructs the flash to fire with the appropriate flash burst length for proper exposure for the camera settings you're using for aperture and iso speed. Note that not all flash models have manual exposure settings available, and not all dedicated flash models can be triggered with "dumb" receivers (some require that the trigger make use of system pins and use the camera manufacturer's proprietary signaling protocol). But, it looks like that Metz 48 AF-1 can probably be triggered OK with most of the generic radio triggers (as it's listed as compatible with newer Cactus triggers, so the same thing probably applies to most other similar setups). As far as extra flashes, if you're using that type of setup ("dumb" radio system) there's no need to buy another Metz dedicated flash (since you wouldn't be using it's dedicated features anyway, since you'd need to use manual power settings in that type of setup). Instead, I'd look for a good price on a non dedicated flash model you could use with manual power settings. Note that one advantage of the Cactus triggers (newer versions) is that the same models (V4, V5) can handle flashes designed for lower trigger voltages (like your Metz) and flashes with higher trigger voltages (as you sometimes see with studio strobes, and many older non dedicated flash models). Some of the other wireless receivers around can only work with one or the other. You wouldn't get ratio control with your A350 or A550 (only one flash group available with those bodies). But, if budget isn't real tight, it probably wouldn't hurt to move to something like the Sony HVL-F43AM. That way, if you did get another camera later that supported ratio control, you'd have a flash model with support for the latest wireless protocols that could work as a master or slave with bodies that allow those features.
