GENIUS Olympiad at SUNY Oswego

SUNY Oswego faculty member Fehmi Damkaci declared all 223 young scientists and artists from 34 countries and 31 states the winners at the closing awards ceremony June 30 of the first GENIUS Olympiad.

“I am happy to have welcomed so many participants from so many countries and states in our first year,” said Damkaci, assistant professor of chemistry and lead organizer of the 2011 Global Environmental Issues and Us international high school science and art competition. “It is really joyful to hear from every participant that they enjoyed it very much and found it very professional and academic. They all thanked SUNY Oswego for hosting such an event.”

The colorful closing ceremonies—with many of the participants in native dress and draped in or waving the flags of their countries—featured the announcement of 18 gold-medal projects in science and six in art. Each winner—many projects had two authors—took home an Acer netbook and a certificate, along with his or her medal.

Twenty-four science and five art projects earned silver medals, and their authors won Kindle e-book readers, while thirty-four science and three art projects received bronze medals, and their authors took home iPods. All awards and other expenses were courtesy of sponsors such as Terra Science and Education Foundation, Syracuse Center of Excellence, SRC, Airgas, Barton & Loguidice, TECHNOtime and Web designer Pccolog Sakbas, as well as the host college.

Some examples of gold-medalists’ projects included “The Effects of Micro-algae Characteristics on the Bioremediation Rate of Deepwater Horizon Crude Oil” (Xiuqui Cao and Ying Xiong of Minnesota), “The Use of Ground Blast Furnace Slag, Chrome Slag and Corn Stem Ash as a Coating Against Corrosion” (Felix Ubisse Jr. and Ayilton Pedro Palate of Mozambique) and “The Influence of Oil Pollution on Soil Micro-biocoenosis and the Biological Remediation of Soil” (Leila Ramankulova of Kazakhstan).

Distant lands

Students arrived at SUNY Oswego June 25 and 26 from Kazakhstan and Kosovo, Mongolia and Myanmar, Tajikistan and Tanzania, and dozens more nations around the globe as well as from states across the nation.

The centerpiece of the June 27-30 competition was the exhibition and judging in Hewitt Union ballroom of science and art projects in ecology and biodiversity, resources and energy, environmental quality, human ecology and in a special category, removing oil from water.

It is pretty obvious they will surely receive more than 40K petitions. Who knows, they must have already got the same in June when they advanced the dates in June VB. Visa numbers are allocated at the time of approval and not at the time the petition is made. Even if they get million petition in July, that does not mean all the Visa numbers are consumed. It is an indicator they have enough petitons to meet the demand to use all the available numbers and alter the VB Cutoff dates for PD in future months. It depends on the approvals too and it is not likely the petitions made in June/july will get approved now... So we must be okay.. but you never know with USCIS/DOL/DOS... Any thing can happen... for instance like the VB is Current for all categories in July. My wife and I will be travelling out of USA to our home country in the first week of August. My employer's attorney will be applying I-140 and I-485 for both of us before we leave the country. My attorney has said that we could travel out of country without jeopardizing the validity of I-485 application as long as it is recived by USCIS prior to leaving the country. Because of a large influx of I-485 applications, USCIS won't be able to issue the receipt notice immediately but will take weeks to issue the receipt nos. However, when they issue the recipt nos, they will use the application receipt date as the date when the application was physically received by them (the day when Fedex or UPS...courier service delivers the applications to them). I haven't open any SR with USCIS , but some folks mention that when they open SR they get standard reply to wait for 30 days. With visa dates going back and forth, customer should open SR as early as month start so if dates remain current for atleast two month they can get some reply. If you wait till end of month and then open SR and if USCIS ask for 30 days and date retrogress , I bet you next reply will be No visa available.
